Over 25 talented young writers from secondary schools in Stockport entered a science-fiction writing competition organised by Stockport Council.
The ‘First Contact’ competition for 14 to 19 years olds set pupils the challenge of writing a maximum 2,000 word article on whether there is life out there in the universe and what the world’s reaction might be if extra-terrestrials made contact.
Councillor Shan Alexander, Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Achievement, said:
“I would like to congratulate everybody who took part in the ‘First Contact’ writing competition.
“The challenge was a great way to encourage pupils to develop their writing skills and think creatively. It’s clear from this competition that Stockport certainly has a lot of talented young writers.”
The winning entry was by 14 years old Oliver Porteous-Williams from Stockport School for his imaginative and thoughtful article. He won a £50 iTunes voucher and a £1,000 for his school.
Paul Harrison, Editor of the Stockport Express, said:
“I liked Oliver’s entry because not only did he follow the brief, he added a fact box about films – something that a newspaper would do. Many congratulations.”
