Following a public consultation period, Stockport Councillors last night (Tuesday 12th November) voted overwhelming to approve and agree to the Stockport’s Strategic Regeneration Framework.
At the Cabinet meeting held in Stockport Town Hall, councillors heard that the consultation process in getting support and feedback regarding the regeneration of Stockport Town Centre West through the Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation had delivered strong support.
The respondents stated that it was important to achieve the right balance homes on a sustainable development to support Greater Manchester’s ambition to become carbon neutral by 2028.
Councillor Sheila Bailey was keen to assure the cabinet that previous commitment to deliver 50% affordable housing with the Stockport Town Centre West development was not a ‘political gesture’ as had previously been suggested but was determined that that will be achieved.
Councillor Amanda Peers was impressed with the level of detail in the SRF and added that while it is important to deliver a balance in choice of homes, it was also important to ensure that there is adequate engagement with local businesses within the area to ensure that they have the opportunity maintain their business presence within the town centre.
Councillor Tom McGee said it is important to state that the development is of a high quality and planning for education and medical healthcare infrastructure is considered from the outset.
The full Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation Business Plan for the period to the end of March 2020 was also agreed.
