New independent businesses, growing visitor numbers and a packed programme of summer events are helping drive the continued revival of Stockport Market.
Home to more than 50 independent traders and more than 750 years of trading history, the market has become a flagship example of how the town centre’s wider transformation is attracting new businesses and visitors and driving investment.
Over the past 12 months the market has welcomed Stockport Provisions and The Pet Grocer and seen artist Kate O’Brien expand into a larger stall.
One of the latest additions to the market is The Brick Prof, a specialist LEGO stall which opened in March 2026 and has already built a loyal following among collectors, families and nostalgia-loving shoppers. The business specialises in retired and hard-to-find LEGO sets and has quickly become one of the market’s most eye-catching new arrivals.

Lou’s Café, which took over the long-established John O’Mara’s café unit last year, has also brought fresh energy to the Market Hall while continuing the market’s tradition of independent cafés serving traders, visitors and the local community.
Now, a packed programme of summer events is set to build on that success, bringing thousands more visitors into the historic Market Place through a series of food festivals, family events, vintage spectaculars and community celebrations.
Leading this year’s programme is the launch of Saturday Snack Down, a brand-new food themed free monthly event taking over Stockport Market Place from June to October.
Alongside Saturday Snack Down, the Market Place will host a packed programme of returning favourites throughout the year including Foodie Friday, Makers Market, STOCK Party, Armed Forces Day celebrations and Stockport Pride, bringing thousands of people into the town centre.
The summer calendar also includes Stockport Vintage Spectacular on Sunday 12 July, when the iconic Victorian Market Hall will be transformed by vintage specialists So Retro Events into a celebration of all things retro. Vintage fashion, vinyl, jewellery, homeware and collectables will sit alongside live swing music, retro entertainment, free vintage bus rides, close-up magic and pop-up experiences throughout the day. Tickets are available now via Eventbrite.
Cllr Micheala Meikle, Cabinet Member for Economy, Regeneration and Skills at Stockport Council, said:
“Stockport Market proudly sits at the heart of our town centre and its continued success shows what is possible when you bring together people, independent businesses and local character.
“We’re proud to see the Market confidently evolving year on year. New events are drawing in first time and repeat visitors, while long-established traders continue to thrive alongside new independent businesses choosing to make Stockport their home.
“This summer’s programme gives even more people the opportunity to experience one of the most vibrant and historic destinations in Greater Manchester.”
Andy Pidgen, Operations Director, Market Place (Europe) Ltd, who manage Stockport Market & events on behalf of Stockport Council, said:
“Stockport Market has always been about much more than shopping. It’s a place where independent businesses, local people and visitors come together to create something special.
“The continued growth of the Market Place reflects the confidence people have in Stockport and the strength of our independent trading community. We’re proud to see new businesses thriving alongside long-established traders, creating a destination that offers something genuinely unique.
“This summer’s programme is all about giving people more reasons to spend time in the Market Place, discover local businesses, enjoy great food and entertainment, and experience the atmosphere that makes Stockport Market such an important part of the town’s identity.
“Whether you’re a regular visitor or discovering the market for the first time, there has never been a better time to come and see what Stockport Market has to offer.”
Debbie and Will Parnell, owners of The Brick Prof, said:
“We absolutely love our new home in Stockport Market. The response from visitors has been incredible, and being surrounded by so many independent businesses creates a unique atmosphere. It’s the ideal place for us to offer everything from sought-after retired LEGO sets to pocket-money treats for younger fans.”
Stockport Market’s success has become a key part of the town centre’s wider renaissance, demonstrating how heritage, independent enterprise and community activity can work together to create thriving destinations.
As investment totalling £2bn continues across Stockport town centre, the Market remains one of its strongest success stories, attracting new audiences while staying true to the independent spirit that has defined it for more than seven centuries.
The market team is now encouraging the next generation of independent businesses to get in touch, with a rare opportunity currently available within the Market Hall and applications open for traders interested in joining the popular weekly outdoor market.
