Stockport Market will join over 700 markets across the country in the third annual event by offering incentivised pitches, mini-event markets by the award-winning Vintage Village and game-changing Teenage Market, and a special appearance by over 30 traders from Heaton Moor Market to attract new market traders to the borough and support the local independent economy.
Stockport Market hosts a late night Foodie Friday on May 16th, joining local arts groups who are staging a Stockport Creative Festival over the weekend to highlight the importance of the market in the heart of our communities as a retail and community asset and a focal point.
Hat Works Museum’s latest exhibition bursts onto the public arena with free catwalk shows hosted at St. Mary’s Church in the Market Place on May 17th. Designer hats created by 13 of the UK’s best up and coming milliners will be showcased, against a spectacular backdrop installation of 10,000 paper hats created by students from Manchester School of Architecture. Come and enjoy high fashion and learn what is hot in contemporary millinery. The shows are at 1.30pm and 2.30pm.
In 2010, Stockport Market celebrated the 750th anniversary of the granting of its market charter. Around 50,000 people took part in the celebrations and it is hoped that this year’s wide range of events and activities will attract even more people.
Graham Wilson OBE, Chief Executive of the National Association of British Market Authorities said:
“Love Your Local Market is the biggest market event in a generation. It gives people the chance of a new career and demonstrates how important the market is to the local community. With the financial backing of the government and our headline sponsor HMY Radford we intend to make Love Your Local Market 2014 the biggest and best markets campaign UK has ever seen.”
Martin Blackwell, CEO of Association of Town Centre Managers, added:
“Markets are at the heart of town centre retailing. With more night markets coming on stream we are seeing the fusing of the day and evening economies. Love Your Local Market is a brilliant opportunity to celebrate that”.
