The first successful applications to benefit from the Stockport Local Fund have been announced.
Almost 200 applications were received and scored against the council’s priorities:
• to increase social contact and support for people who are socially isolated or lonely
• to get more people involved in supporting each other with long-term physical and/or mental health conditions
• to help more people to succeed in making long-term lifestyle changes to improve their own health and wellbeing.
Applicants who applied for under £500 and were successful will receive their funding over the next few weeks.
First round winners of funding are:
SPARC (Stockport Progress & Recovery Centre) – Football group participating in local disability league
OWLS (Ongoing Women’s Local Support) – Supporting victims of domestic abuse
Heaton Norris Dementia Group – Supporting people with dementia and their carers
Rotary Club – Basic Cooking Skills for Children
Stockport RUFC All Stars – Rugby team for children with disabilities
Practice Champions – Weekly session to improve health & wellbeing
Cale Green Women’s Institute – Setting up a friendship group
Marple United Reformed Church Day Centres – Luncheon club for older members of the community
Successful ideas needed to demonstrate that they would make a difference to both the people involved and the wider community and that the idea would be sustainable once support from Stockport Local Fund has ended.
Applicants who applied for under £500 and were successful will receive their funding over the next few weeks.
Those who applied for more than £500, whose ideas passed the first stage of the application process, now need to tell us more about their idea so we can make our final funding decisions.
Councillor Elise Wilson, Cabinet Member for Reform and Governance at Stockport Council said:
“I would like to thank all the people who applied to Stockport Local Fund. We received lots of fresh new ideas and have had to select those that offer the most immediate benefits to Stockport communities against our current health, social, lifestyle and wellbeing criteria.
“We have a total of £1 million to invest in local activities and projects and there will be further opportunities to apply, to give others the chance to see their ideas flourish. If you weren’t successful this time we encourage you to develop your idea or suggest a new idea and have another go later in the year.”
Many applicants also asked for other types of support with their idea and Stockport Council will be contacting them directly about that soon. Funding for community ideas may also be available from other sources and information about these can be found on our community funding web pages: http://www.stockport.gov.uk/topic/community-funding.
