Life Leisure’s Houldsworth Village Gym in Reddish has been shortlisted for a prestigious fitness industry award, beating off strong competition to make the finals.
The club has been shortlisted in the ‘Strength Training Gym of the Year’ at the National Fitness Awards, an annual event which recognises excellence and achievement in gyms and leisure centres throughout the country.
Life Leisure has formed a unique collaboration with British Weight Lifting to bring to the North West ‘a one of a kind’ Weight Lifting Academy. The partnership shaped a massive redevelopment and extension at Houldsworth Village earlier this year, helping the centre and the sport go from strength to strength in just a few months. It’s a real asset for both the area and the local community, which has obviously impressed the judging panel.
Chris Scott, General Manager at Life Leisure Houldsworth Village said: “Whether you are an accomplished weightlifter or just looking to try out a new sport, the facilities and training are superb, everyone is welcome. We are also very proud of the fact that our facilities enable people with physical disabilities to participate too and we are delighted to be the home of Arnies Powerlifting & Weight Training club. We are also encouraging young people and recently held a Kid’s free week where they could have a go; the junior weight lifting was fully subscribed with the youngsters getting really enthusiastic about the sport.”
Weightlifting is a longstanding Olympic sport and as part of the legacy from London 2012, some of the equipmentat the Games including benches, weights and chalk bins have been given a new home at Houldsworth Village.
The awards are organised by leading fitness industry magazine Workout, with support from headline sponsor ServiceSport. Trophies will be handed out a glittering awards ceremony on Friday November 28 at The Athena in Leicester, which will be hosted by boxing world champion and local Manchester lad Ricky Hatton and top TV presenter and fitness expert Caroline Pearce.
National Fitness Awards’ director Judith Halkerston said: “Considering the high number and calibre of entries, it is a huge achievement to be one of just a handful of shortlisted gyms in your category and each and every one of our finalists should be congratulated for making it this far.”
