Compost Awareness Week takes place between 6th and 12th May and Stockport Council is reminding people how easily and effectively they can dispose of their green waste.
The Council provides households with a food caddie and green wheelie bin for disposing of garden waste such as grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, plants, branches and all types of food waste.
Residents can also compost all their uncooked kitchen waste by using a home compost bin. This includes vegetable peelings, tea bags shredded paper and pet bedding. Waste can simply be put into a compost bin and left to break down for a few months. The result is rich and nutritious compost which can be used in the garden to improve soil structure, suppress weeds and improve drainage.

Many residents are already composting at home, but Stockport Council would like to encourage more people to consider home composting as an effective way of dealing with their food and garden waste.
Councillor Kevin Hogg, Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Public Realm, said:
“The Council provides a green bin for garden and food waste, but it is also really easy to start home composting, which has a lot of benefits for your garden. Compost Awareness Week is a great opportunity for you to tell all your friends and neighbours about the benefits of home composting and become a composting champion in your community.”
The Council in partnership with getcomposting.com are offering home compost bins for as little as £16.98 plus delivery – less than half the recommended retail price of £39. There is also a ‘Buy One Get One Half Price’ offer, adding extra value to residents with larger gardens or those who team up with a friend or neighbour to buy a bin.
