Stockport ‘Friends of’ groups honoured in annual Greenspace Awards

Volunteers and ‘Friends of’ groups maintaining parks, allotments, greenspaces and cemeteries in Stockport have been recognised in the annual Greenspace Awards.

The awards acknowledge the invaluable work and commitment of those who help to make green spaces in the borough welcoming places for visitors and residents.

The tasks undertaken by volunteers and friends of groups complement routine and grounds maintenance work carried out by teams of skilled Council officers as well as contractors, Totally Local Company.

Stockport Council’s Greenspace Awards were separated into eight different categories: Working with Ambition, Innovation, Equality & Accessibility, Health and Wellbeing, Achieving as a Team/Friends of Group, Individual, Rising Star, and Looking After The Environment Award.

Cllr Grace Baynham (pictured right, alongside Phoebe Spence who was awarded the Looking after the Environment award for her work on Mile End Meadow in Heaviley), Cabinet Member for Parks, Highways and Transport Services, said:

“I’m delighted that we can formally recognise the amazing work that our many volunteers and friends of groups undertake throughout the year.

“They are real unsung heroes and work tirelessly to ensure our much-loved parks and greenspaces look their best.

“It’s fantastic that we can give them the recognition they so rightly deserve through these awards – showing our appreciation is something that means a lot to me.”

The winners in each category have been given a voucher and a certificate, while those who have been Highly Commended have also been awarded a certificate.
