Stockport Council is encouraging residents to recycle as much as possible over the festive period as part of its ‘Right Thing, Right Bin’ initiative.
Residents now also have the facility to recycle more of their household waste, using their wheelie bins. This includes wrapping paper, food waste, cardboard food packaging and Christmas trees.
People can recycle their real Christmas tree by chopping it into pieces and putting it in their green garden/food waste bin. Food waste such as turkey carcasses and plate scrapings can also go in this bin which is then collected for composting.
Since the Council introduced its new waste and recycling system last year, recycling rates have nearly doubled, rising from 35% in 2007/8 to 63%.
Councillor Kevin Hogg, Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Public Realm, said: “During the festive season I would urge borough residents to recycle as much as possible. The Council is also advising borough residents to check their recycling and waste collection calendars for any changes over the festive period.”
The collection dates for most properties in Stockport will not be affected over the Christmas period.
Those collections affected are as follows:
- Black, blue and brown bin collections due to be collected on Christmas Day will be collected on Saturday 22nd December
- Green bins due to be collected on Christmas Day will be collected on Saturday 29th December 2012
