Stockport County Football Club has applied for planning permission to construct a temporary roof over the Railway End Stand at its Edgeley Park stadium.
Proposals seek to ensure the Club is compliant with English Football League (EFL) requirements that at least 20% of its away seating allocation is undercover to ensure fairness and comfort during adverse weather. During the 2025/26 season, the the Railway End Stand will be primarily used to house away supporters, while the full length of the Pop Side will be allocated to home supporters for high-profile fixtures and minimise disruption for season ticket holders. The changes will allow the Club to focus on improving the matchday experience for fans in this stand – with reduced queueing times, improved facilities and an enhanced match atmosphere.
Ken Knott, Chair of Stockport County Football Club, commented:
“The proposal to seek planning permission for a temporary roof covering in the Railway Stand will not only enable the Club to fully comply with the EFL regulations associated with the provision of under cover facilities for away fans, but it will also strengthen the Club’s ability to maximise attendance capacity and provide County fans with access to more tickets for games at Edgeley Park.”
Plans for the Railway End Stand are independent of the current planning application for the major redevelopment of Edgeley Park. The Club anticipates these plans will be considered by Stockport Council’s Planning and Highways Committee in August 2025.
Ken Knott continued:
“With regards to the major redevelopment of Edgeley Park, for which we are also seeking a planning permission, fans should note we are seeking a temporary permission for a proposed temporary roof covering for up to three years, and that our ambitious plans for the stadium will be brought forward in due course. As we have consistently stated to fans, the plans for a new Railway End Stand will, to a large extent, be dependent on ongoing on-field success and a promotion into the EFL Championship.”
