Over 500 local children were given the chance to play on the hallowed turf at Edgeley Park as part of a two day celebration of grassroots football hosted by Stockport County Community Trust.
On Saturday 17th May and Sunday 18th May, teams from the junior football clubs backed by Stockport County’s Grassroots Fund were invited to play in a friendly six-a-side competition. Games were officiated by students from the Stockport County Football Education college programme, and friends and family were able to watch on from the stands.
The 2024-25 season saw Stockport County grant funding to 23 junior grassroots clubs across the borough, providing up to £1,500 per club to support the work done every year by volunteers running boys’ and girls’ sides across all age groups.
Dave Wardle, Operations Director at the Community Trust, said:
“We’re very proud of our Grassroots Fund and place huge value on the work done by volunteers across Stockport to provide weekly football opportunities for local children.
“The feedback we have received from the clubs shows the impact these grants have made over the past two seasons, whether that’s been funding kits, equipment or supporting the cost of pitch hire.
“It was our pleasure to welcome all the young players from local grassroots clubs and give them the opportunity to play on the Edgeley Park pitch, and I’m sure they all had an experience to remember.”
A raffle also took place at the event, raising over £1,000 for the Kits By County campaign which provides free PE kits to local school children who need them most. Winners of the lucky tickets have already been contacted.
Stockport County Football Club and its Community Trust will be relaunching the Grassroots Football Fund for the 2025-26 season.
