Following the award of £20 million of Capital Levelling Up funding, Stockport Council has updated residents on progress towards the development of a new Leisure and Community Hub in Marple.
The Council is currently in the process of putting in place a professional services team to progress the detailed design of the project, with an engagement process taking place over the coming months to share final plans with the community.
As well as the final design of the hub itself, engagement will also set out walking, cycling and highways improvements to be delivered at the same time, all of which formed part of the funding bid.
It is expected that a planning application will be submitted during Winter 2023, allowing construction works to begin in Summer 2024 and the new facility opening in Winter 2025.
Proposals will see the former pool buildings demolished to make way for the new hub’s construction. The current library will also be relocated temporarily ahead of the start of works to ensure continued provision for Marple residents, with further announcements to be made with more detailed timeframes for the Leisure and Community Hub.
Stockport Council has set up a dedicated email address to give local organisations and residents the opportunity to submit any further questions that will be answered in future updates on the project.
