STOCKPORT Council has issued a tender for the design and build of the A6 Manchester Airport Relief Road said to be worth between £100m-£140m.
The new dual carriageway will cover 6 miles to relieve airport traffic from the towns and villages to the south and west of Stockport. Starting at Hazel Grove the bypass will connect the A6 to the M56 and ease pressure on the often congested routes through Bramhall, Cheadle Hulme and Heald Green.
It is tendering the design and construction of a six-mile stretch of dual carriageway between the A6 at Hazel Grove and the M56, incorporating the existing section of the A555.
The whole project is estimated to be costing around £290m, partly funded by central government – £165m, the Greater Manchester Transport Fund contributing £29m, around £7m from Manchester Airport and approximately £90m as a result of Greater Manchester’s £1.2bn City Deal with the government.
The work is scheduled to begin later this year in October and due to be completed in 2017and the deadline for expressions of interest is February 15.
