Stockport Council have been successful in being shortlisted as a finalist in the Digital Leaders 100 Awards’ Smart Cities category.
To reach the shortlist, the council has demonstrated how new and sustainable digital technologies are being used to bring together people, information and technology to help citizens and communities live, work, play and connect.
A public vote is now open to determine the top 3 finalists. The borough’s residents and businesses can vote via the Digital Leaders 100 website.
Cllr Kate Butler, Cabinet Member for Citizen Focus and Engagement says:
We are a radical digital council. We lead the way in helping communities and businesses make the most of digital opportunities and prepare them for whatever the future holds. Our continued investment in connectivity, data science, digital skills, our digital economy, healthcare, and high-tech assistance in new homes is helping shape Stockport as a place where everyone benefits from the opportunities of the digital era and no-one is left behind.”
Stockport’s successes include technology-led initiatives, such as, the all age living campus, pioneering approaches to data science, and technology enabled health and social care programmes using the internet of things. The nomination also recognises the way we are engaging citizens and communities to help make the most of the new digital opportunities, including our “Digiknow” digital inclusion alliance that has already supported over 8,000 residents to become online citizens with the skills to engage in the digital world.
Digital Leaders is a nationwide initiative for promoting effective, long-term digital transformation across government, industry and charities. Russell Haworth, Chair of Digital Leaders, said:
The Digital Leaders 100 list 2020 once again highlights the progress in digitally transforming the UK. Our community of Digital Leaders have shone a light on the many hidden heroes, quietly getting on with the nation’s digital transformation. It is fabulous to see such a strong list from outside London this year reflecting our own inclusive national programme and the growing importance of digital transformation on companies irrespective of size or sector.”
