Stockport Council has launched a new awareness campaign to help residents find new ways to feel more positive at the start of the New Year.
‘5 Ways to Feel Good’ is a campaign based on five proven activities that can boost the mood of participants: connecting, getting active, learning something new, giving, and taking notice of our surroundings.
The campaign has launched in January, as seasonal affective disorder (SAD), affects around 2 million people in the UK (NHS Inform, 2022). It aims to encourage residents to build the 5 Ways into their daily lives.
The Healthy Stockport website has a new campaign area for the 5 Ways to Feel Good, which features top tips, resident stories and local, weekly events that residents can join.
One of the stories features Jamie Beard, a Brinnington Resident who has taken up boxing with BOOST: a great example of ‘getting active’ as part of the 5 Ways to Feel Good. Jamie said:
“I was in a quite bad place at the beginning of the year for personal reasons, so I thought, mentally, I need to do something for me.
“I thought with the gym being so local, it was the best thing I could do. I didn’t really do it for the thought of weight and muscle and stuff like that … I’ve benefited from my mindset and how I view myself.”

Another story features Martin Lepp, who joined Heatons’ Men in Sheds after his wife sadly passed away. There are a number of Men in Sheds groups across Stockport, which offer opportunities to keep learning and connect with other people.
On joining the group, Martin said: “It’s one of the best things I’ve ever done.” Watch Martin’s story here.
The 5 Ways to Feel Good campaign was created with feedback from residents and community organisations across the borough. Both digital and printed brochures and leaflets are being shared with Stockport wellbeing groups, and the council is partnering with voluntary and statutory partner organisations to raise further awareness across communities.
Cllr Keith Holloway, Cabinet Member for Health & Adult Social Care for Stockport Council, said:
“Whether you have the ‘new year, new me’ attitude or not, everyone can get something out of the 5 Ways to Feel Good.
“January can be tough on our wellbeing, and that’s not even considering the ongoing issues we’re currently facing. That’s why we wanted to share these five ways, as there is good evidence that people can benefit from them.
“The new Healthy Stockport web pages provide lots of information and inspiration on how we can boost our mood without it having to cost a penny. So, if you’re looking to make a positive change in 2023, why not see whether you can make the 5 Ways to Feel Good part of your routine?
“Please don’t forget that there’s support in Stockport to help you through tougher times: you can find financial support by visiting the Cost of Living Hub, and there’s always someone to talk to if you’re feeling worried, stressed or low.”
