With darker evenings looming Stockport Council has re-launched a road safety campaign aimed at road users over the age of 55.
This autumn’s ‘See Me’ campaign was launched at Asda Supermarket in Hazel Grove on Monday 7th October with road safety officers handing out reflective shopping bags and also giving advice to older road users, reminding them:
- To wear bright or fluorescent clothing to make sure that they are seen during the day, especially in dull or misty weather – but remember that fluorescent clothes won’t show up after dark.
- To wear reflective clothing, which will show up in car headlights at night.
- Plan the routes that they take to include safer crossing places.
The campaign also focuses on how roads in
the area have changed over the years and the
challenges this brings for older pedestrians
and drivers.
Drivers will also be offered the chance to use
an eyesight screener to check whether they
might need their eyes retested for driving.
As part of the campaign Council Road Safety
Officers will be visiting various locations across
the borough to give advice.
Councillor Iain Roberts, Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Economic Development and Regeneration, said:
“The Council’s ‘See Me’ campaign will help to raise awareness of the potential risks on our streets and to make sure that all road users of all ages remain confident and safe. The older we get the more likely we are to suffer serious injuries when involved in a road traffic accident and this campaign aims to reduce these accidents.”
