Andrew Bennett, who represented parts of Stockport as their local MP from 1974 to 2005, died on 15th December 2024 aged 85 following a short illness.
Born 9th March 1939, Andrew Francis Bennett was a Labour Party politician, who, as an MP, represented Stockport North from 1974 to 1983, and then for Denton and Reddish from 1983 to 2005.
Bennett attended the William Hulme’s Grammar School in Whalley Range before taking up a place at the University of Birmingham where he gained a BSocSc (Bachelor of Social Science). A geography teacher from 1960 to 1974, he was elected to Oldham Borough Council in 1964, and served on it until 1974 when he became an MP.
Cllr Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council said:
“It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Andrew Bennett, a former Member of Parliament for Stockport North and Denton and Reddish, who spent 31 years dedicating much of his life to the people of our town and beyond.
“Andrew was a tireless advocate for his constituents and worked passionately on issues that mattered to many, including social justice, public services, and the wellbeing of communities. His legacy in Stockport will be remembered not only for his political achievements but also for his commitment to making a real difference to the lives of those he served.
“As an MP, Andrew’s integrity, humility, and strong sense of duty earned him the respect of many, both in Parliament and throughout our communities.
“On behalf of Stockport Council, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to Andrew’s family, friends, and all who knew him. He will be greatly missed, and our thoughts are with his loved ones at this difficult time.”
