Stockport Council is among the organisations backing Small Business Saturday on 7th December and encouraging residents to shop locally this Christmas.
Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-commercial campaign, which celebrates small business success and encourages consumers to support businesses in their communities. The day itself takes place on the first Saturday in December each year, but with an impact that lasts all year round. This year, Small Business Saturday takes place on 7th December 2024.
Now in its twelfth year in the UK, the campaign has grown significantly year on year encouraging millions to shop small, and also enjoys the backing of credit card provider, American Express, which this year is also inviting shoppers to nominate independent small businesses to win one of 10 grants of £10,000.
In Stockport, Small Business Saturday follows a number of events that have taken place throughout the year to encourage visitors into the town centre and district centres, such as the recent Stockport Spectacular Sunday, to bring a boost to the local economy.
Cllr Colin Macalister, Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration at Stockport Council, said:
“Stockport is home to an incredible variety of small businesses, from unique shops and restaurants to skilled service providers and creative professionals. Whether you’re hunting for the perfect gift, treating yourself to a delicious meal, or in need of expert local services, there’s something for everyone right here in our community.
“Shopping locally doesn’t just keep businesses thriving, it also benefits the environment by reducing unnecessary travel. Every pound spent in the community supports local employees, suppliers, and the wider area. In fact, if every household spent just £1 a week locally, it would mean £6 million going back into local businesses each year.
“Let’s keep our Brilliant Businesses Bouncing this Christmas. Together, we can make a big impact—because when Stockport thrives, we all do. Make Small Business Saturday the start of your local shopping this festive season and show your support for the businesses that make Stockport so special.”
Businesses in Stockport can also register on the Small Business Saturday website to be listed in their directory, to ensure they can easily be found by customers specifically looking for a local, independent supplier both at Christmas and throughout the year.
