At its Budget Council meeting on Thursday 27th February, Stockport Council agreed to freeze Council Tax for residents.
Residents will see a small increase of 0.2% in their overall bills as the Police and Crime Commissioner for Greater Manchester decided to increase the amount paid for policing which is controlled by him.
The Band D Council Tax in Stockport for the 2014/15 financial year, including the extra charge, is £1,606.99.
Councillor Sue Derbyshire, Leader of Stockport Council, said:
“It is a significant achievement that we are on target to make the savings we identified last year as a two-year savings programme. This has not been easy and Council employees have worked tirelessly to minimise disruption to residents.
“We have been preparing for the 2014/15 Council budget since our consultation in 2012 where we asked for views of residents over the principles which should drive the financial savings we faced. These principles include protecting the most vulnerable members of our society whilst building and supporting independence for individuals and communities. This remains fundamental to our budget decisions.
“In addition to being on track with our current savings, we are embarking on an once-in-a-lifetime £100 million programme to rebuild our roads and footpaths over the next 10 years. This should help boost the local economy whilst dramatically improving the condition of our roads and pavements.
“And our ambitious ‘Investing in Stockport’ programme of reform and growth will help regenerate the economy, create jobs and develop strong communities. We are using our capital assets to invest in the town centre, build the SEMMMS relief road, and expand schools.
“Over 200 more young people are now in apprenticeships following close work between the Council, the National Apprenticeship service and local employers. This emphasises that our priority will always be supporting the residents of Stockport,” Cllr Derbyshire added.
The Council Tax charges in 2014/15, including the Greater Manchester Police and Fire and Rescue precepts, are:
