Stockport Council has confirmed Cllr Mark Roberts as the new Leader of the Council, replacing Cllr Mark Hunter who announced he would step down from the role earlier this year.
Cllr Jilly Julian has also been named as Deputy Leader of the Council, a role previously held by the new Leader. She will also continue in her role as the Council’s cabinet member of finance and resources. The pair were previously elected as Leader and Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, the largest political grouping on Stockport Council, earlier this month.
Confirmation came during Stockport Council’s Annual Meeting on 20th May, which also saw the appointment of its Cabinet: Cllr Wendy Meikle, Cllr Helen Foster-Grime, Cllr Grace Baynham, Cllr Dan Oliver, Cllr Jake Austin and Cllr Michaela Meikle. Each Cabinet member holds a portfolio of areas across the council that they are responsible for.
The Council Meeting has also given approval to the appointment of members to committees, including the appointment of chairs and vice-chairs, and noted the appointment of political Group Leaders for the forthcoming year
Cllr Mark Roberts, Leader of the Council, said:
“I’m really proud to be stepping into the role of leader of Stockport Council.
“I want to start by thanking Cllr Mark Hunter for his incredible service to this borough. His leadership has helped shape the Stockport that we see today and it’s a pretty exciting place to be.”
Cllr Jilly Julian, Deputy Leader of the Council, said:
“I’m really pleased and excited to be the new Deputy Leader of Stockport Council.
“My role is all about supporting the Leader in leading our new cabinet, working with communities across the borough, and helping to make sure the Council delivers on the things that matter most to you – from local services to big plans for Stockport’s future.”
