
Calling all rail enthusiasts! Celebrate the 175th anniversary of the opening of Edgeley Station at the Stockport Community Rail Festival featuring displays of steam and diesel locomotives.
The Community Rail Festival is on Saturday 5th May 2018 at Edgeley Station from 09:30 until 16:00.
Fifty years ago saw the closure of Edgeley steam locomotive shed in Stockport effectively marking the end of steam operation in the area. These were a time of momentous change for the railways in Stockport with the closure of the former Midland Railway from Manchester Central through Stockport Tiviot Dale to Derbyshire and London St Pancras. This had followed the completion of the electrification of the old London and North Western Railway route from Manchester and Stockport to Birmingham and London Euston bringing new faster and cleaner trains and better timetables for passengers.

Stockport Community Rail Festival
Celebrating fifty years since these events and the development of the railway and its wider community over those years, the 175th anniversary of the opening of Edgeley station on its present site, together with recognising 100 years since the armistice of 1918.
A great day out for all the family, the Community Rail Festival will feature displays of steam and diesel locomotives with other local transport exhibits including an original Stockport Tram in and around Edgeley Station, events include:

A Talk by Paul Shackcloth
In the evening over at Stockport Art Gallery, a talk by Paul Shackcloth recalling the events of fifty years ago, when the steam locomotive ceased to operate regularly in the Stockport area and the last days of Stockport Corporation Transport. Paul will be covering all periods from inception up to 1968/9.
