STOCKPORT College Carpentry and Wood Occupation student Matthew Beech has scooped silver place in a prestigious construction competition.
This week the 18-year-old recently became the regional runner up in the annual Institute of Carpenters competition this academic year, the competition is open to all wood occupation students throughout the UK.
His ability to create a traditional sash window was challenged with a set test plan which he had to complete under very strict guidelines and conditions.

Matthews tutor, Steve Oliver commended his outstanding creative ability of in Wood Occupations. Steve said: “Matthew’s profound knowledge gained through his peers and workshop projects here at Stockport College will greatly enhance his career prospects within the construction industry in the future as a skilled professional practitioner in his own right.”
The Institute of Carpenters (IOC) aims to promote excellence in the use of various timbers, it’s there to support members who aspire to the highest standards of a skills as a professional practitioner within the field of wood occupations.
The IOC is not restricted to just carpenters – they welcome all from various areas of wood occupations including formwork carpenters, furniture & cabinet makers, boat builders (woodworking skills), joiners, shop fitters, heavy structural post & beam carpenters, wood carvers & wood turners.
Matthew said: “I had no doubt that Carpentry was the trade for me after working with such experienced tutors at Stockport College and gaining so much knowledge from them.”
