Stockport College is proud to announce that for the next two years the Principal’s Annual charity will be ‘When You Wish upon a Star’ and ‘Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention’.
During the spring, the College set about asking students and staff which charity they would most like to help. When all votes were in, there were two clear winners – When You Wish upon a Star and Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention.
While the College would like to help as many organisations as possible, choosing two charities means they can each benefit substantially from a larger donation.
It also enables the College to build up a relationship with each of the charities, giving staff and students the opportunity to find out more about them and their work.
Genesis is the only charity in the UK entirely dedicated to Predicting and Preventing breast cancer. Based at Europe’s first Breast Cancer Prevention Centre, The Nightingale Centre & Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital.
Currently, 1 in 10 women and 1 in 1000 men will develop the disease at some time in their lives. The charity supports ground-breaking medical research projects with the aim of helping to create a breast cancer free future for the next generation.
The second charity, When You Wish upon a Star, is a small charity whose primary aim is to grant the Wishes of children suffering from life threatening illnesses. Since they started in 1990, they have granted over 14,500 wishes for many brave and courageous children and their families.
Principal Stephen Carlisle (left) said:
“The College is delighted to be able to
help two good causes. We aim to
provide more than just education and
training; we encourage students to get
involved in their local community and
help others.
“By taking part in fundraising activities,
students gain new skills and increase
their self-confidence. “
