The Chief Executive of Stockport Borough Council, Eamonn Boylan, met with Marketing Stockport’s key sponsors yesterday (Wednesday) to present the plans for the regeneration of Stockport.
The presentation ‘Regenerating Stockport – Successes & Future Priorities’ reiterated Stockport’s standing as a key area for growth and development being one of Greater Manchester’s principal towns.
My Boylan explained that Stockport is ideally located for rail, road and air transport links; it has an excellent and diverse skills base; there is a very solid business base, a very supportive council and a quite amazing passion among the business community to drive Stockport forward.
Stockport Council, working in conjunction with private businesses and enterprises has many plans to maximise on the opportunities for Stockport to become the ideal destination to live, to work and to locate a business.
Planning permission has just been granted for the Bridgefield development in the town centre to proceed while work has already begun on the former Grand Central site alongside Stockport station.

Work is also underway to regenerate Stockport’s historic market area to improve the quality and diversity of the market’s offering.
Following Stockport’s success in being appointed a Portas Pilot town and being given £100,000 funding which has been matched by an additional £100,000 from the council, Mr Boylan explained that a Town Team has been set up and the focus will also be on the shopping area around Underbanks to develop projects including support for specialist retail, creative and events.
Attention has also been placed on housing in the town centre where 147 new homes have or are in the process of being completed including the development impressive Royal Oak Brewery project which saw all units being sold ‘off plan’.

The development at Woodford is currently going through the stages of public consultation; a Supplementary Planning Document has been issued and the long planned A6 relief road from Hazel Grove to Manchester Airport is also at the stage of public consultation.
Eamonn also outlined development plans for the district centres of Marple, Brinnington and Offerton including leisure, retail, community and housing projects.
