Stockport offers an exceptional workforce with first class connectivity and out standing education. The opportunities available for new or established companies setting up or expanding in the area are phenomenal.
Historically, the whole of the metropolitan borough has cultivated an effective environment for enterprise and business start-ups. The date collated by Stockport Economic Alliance shows that it is frequently outperformed conurbation, regional and national figures.
Changes to the Town Centre
Nicola Turner, Stockport’s Council’s head of growth, said that it is vital businesses have the right physical environment to enable strong economic growth.
Turner continued:
“The last few years have seen the most significant investment into Stockport town centre in a generation.
“The visual impact created by Stockport Exchange and Redrock developments is a real sign that the town centre is changing, while the work to reanimate the historic Market Place and Underbanks area has the potential to completely change perceptions about what the town centre is and can be.
“The schemes that are currently on site all play a part in changing the town centre and providing something different.
“The commercial development at Stockport Exchange and the Redrock leisure development are major investment schemes that have generated a lot of interest but the Town Centre Access Package transport improvements and the work underway to unlock the potential of the Market Place and Underbanks area will have just as important an impact.
“The council’s acquisition of Merseyway and its redevelopment plans for the centre will play a huge role in ensuring that there’s a strong future for the town centre retail offer.”
Marketing Stockport’s very own founder and co-director Richard Higginson added that the ongoing transformation of Stockport is incredibly important for the ongoing sucess of the city region.
He explained:
“Over the past two to three years, there has been a groundswell of activity and ambitious plans unveiled for the future of Stockport.
“The changes outside Stockport Station and the development at Redrock visually show that investment is being made and the town is evolving into a viable place to live and do business.
“Having lived and worked here most of my life, there is a tangible and visible change happening that will future-proof Stockport.
“One of the main positive changes is the Stockport Exchange area.
“Creating a Spinningfields feel outside the railway station.
“The public realm area is now fit for purpose and an attractive welcome and entrance to the town centre.”
Contributions to Northern Powerhouse
Higginson continued with the sentiment that,
“We want to see Stockport as a key player in the Northern Powerhouse and one that is recognised as the destination of choice for businesses.
“Building on its industrial heritage and foundation – Stockport is
evolving to be a key part in business success due to location, skill sets, education and general offering away from the office.“The Borough of Stockport is diverse and offers many opportunities and locations for business location.”
