Improvements for traffic flow and an ease to congestion along St Mary’s Way is approaching its final phase of road closures ahead of completion in this spring.
The works around St Mary’s Way for part of Stockport’s Town Centre Access Plan (TCAP) designed to make it easier for everyone to travel into and around Stockport town centre regardless of how they travel. TCAP will address congestion hotspots, improve junctions and road links and creating nicer environments for pedestrians and cyclists.
One of the most high profile TCAP projects currently on site is the widening and improvement of St Mary’s Way, which will reduce congestion on this important route.
Contractors will begin the final stages of construction from Monday 8th January. This stage of works will mainly focus on widening the junction of St Mary’s Way and Hall Street, allowing more traffic to use it in the future. To ensure this work can be completed as quickly as possible, whilst also ensuring the safety of our contractors, these works will require some traffic management to be put in place.
From 8th January, the left turn lane on St Mary’s Way southbound (uphill heading away from the Portwood roundabout) will be closed for approximately 7 weeks, meaning vehicles will be unable to turn left from St Mary’s Way into Hall Street.
A signed diversion route will be in place for motorists during this time via Hempshaw Lane.
At the same time, preparations for the completion of the works will begin with overnight resurfacing works taking place.
From Monday 15th January 2018, St Mary’s Way (between Portwood Roundabout and Hall Street) and Newbridge Lane (between Alpine Road and Stringer Street) will be closed overnight for resurfacing on weekdays between 8pm to 5:30am, for approximately 3 weeks. Signed diversions will be in place and emergency vehicle access maintained during these times.
The works will continue to be co-ordinated with other projects in the town centre.
We apologise in advance for any delays or inconvenience this may cause.
Funded by the Local Growth Deal, the £74m TCAP programme is one of the largest scheme of its kind being undertaken in Greater Manchester at present and will play a key role in supporting the growth of Stockport town centre.
Up to date information on these works will be provided on the TCAP web pages www.stockport.gov.uk/towncentreaccess
