Stockport is set to welcome a major new arrival this year as Danish retail chain, Søstrene Grene, announces a new store opening in Merseyway Shopping Centre.
Bringing its contemporary home décor, furniture and lifestyle products to Stockport for the first time, the new store is a win for local shoppers and is a strong endorsement of the town centre as its ongoing regeneration progresses.
Founded in Aarhus, Denmark in 1973 by Inger Grene and Knud Cresten Vaupell Olsen, Søstrene Grene – which translates as the ‘Green Sisters’ – is celebrated for its curated collections of home décor, furniture, craft items and gift ideas. Now led by Grene’s sons, Mikkel and Cresten Grene, the brand continues to grow internationally, while staying true to its family-run roots.
Taking over a spacious 4,590 sq ft unit formerly occupied by JD Sports (which last year relocated to a larger flagship store in the converted BHS building) the Søstrene Grene opening marks an exciting milestone for Stockport, where visitors will be able to experience a signature immersive shopping experience, featuring soft lighting, classical music and a distinctive labyrinth-style layout, designed to surprise and inspire at every turn.
The brand is the latest Scandinivian retailer to invest in Stockport, alongside JYSK and furniture giant IKEA, which opened a specialist Plan & Order Point store in Merseyway in 2023, and the decision to open in Merseyway is testament to the strength of Stockport’s local retail scene.
Central to Stockport’s £1 billion regeneration plans, Merseyway is playing a key role in the town’s vision of a thriving and vibrant town centre. Major projects include Stockroom, a new cultural and creative space opening later this month which will offer a library, café, and event spaces, and the Merseyway Innovation Centre, which offers flexible working spaces and offices to support local businesses. Recent improvements to Merseyway’s public spaces, including new seating areas and landscaping, further cement the centre’s appeal as a place to shop, relax, and enjoy the heart of Stockport’s transformation.
Cllr Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council, said:
“The arrival of Søstrene Grene is a great example of the growing confidence in Stockport. With Stockroom opening at the end of May and more high street names choosing Merseyway, we’re building a dynamic mix of retail, leisure and culture that’s drawing people in and transforming the town. It’s a clear sign that our £1bn regeneration is not only taking shape – it’s delivering, creating a vibrant place where people want to shop, visit and spend time.”
Søstrene Grene Group CEO, Mikkel Grene said:
“We are looking very much forward to opening our first store in wonderful Stockport. This opening will further solidify our presence in Greater Manchester, where we have many loyal customers. The location in Merseyway Shopping Centre is superb and this new store will be the first in the area to showcase our newest shopping concept where we have worked especially on evoking the visitors’ senses. We want our visitors to feel like entering a Søstrene Grene is like taking a break from an often-hectic everyday life and we cannot wait to spread this feeling amongst shoppers in Stockport.”
Victoria Nichol, Merseyway Centre Manager, said:
“Søstrene Grene is exactly the kind of brand we’re excited to bring to Merseyway – modern, design-led and offering something truly different. We’re confident their immersive shopping concept and stylish products will be fully embraced by our shoppers and this opening is a real statement to where Stockport is headed and the kind of experiences we want to offer our visitors.”
Søstrene Grene is set to open later this year. More details will be announced in the coming months.
