Volunteer Marion Dunn never imagined she would spend her retirement working in a charity shop almost 100 miles from her home in County Durham.
But such is her dedication to helping others that she has joined the team of volunteers assisting St Ann’s Hospice at their shop in Bramhall.
She is following in the footsteps of sister Alison Holland who suggested she joined her at the shop after she moved to the village almost a year ago to be near her two daughters Emma and Beth and four grandchildren.
Marion, from Spennymoor, pictured with Alison Holland (left) said:
“I come down to stay with Alison four or five times a year and there’s only so many things we can do so while I’m here, so we asked the manager Carol Carter if I could help out and she agreed.
“I come in once or twice a week while I’m down here though I’m still the apprentice at the moment and help out by sifting through clothes in the back of the shop. I don’t know a lot about St Ann’s Hospice apart from the wonderful work it does in the community.”
Marion has received an award in the North East for her community work with the young and elderly.
At 69, Alison is a year younger than her sister. “It’s lovely for us to work together, though she can be quite bossy,” joked Alison.
“I like the liveliness of the centre of Bramhall and the people are just as friendly as in the North East, though up in that part of the world they can be a little nosey as well!”
