Hairdresser Becky Kay and her sister Donna Miles are taking part in the Manchester Midnight Walk in memory of their late grandfather and as a way of thanking St Ann’s Hospice for caring for him during the final weeks of his life.
Albert Boot from Portwood Stockport died of lung cancer just over a month ago, aged 74, and spent several weeks as a patient at the Heald Green hospice after he was only diagnosed towards the end of last year.
Becky, from Edgeley, said:
“The staff and volunteers at St Ann’s were amazing and looked after all our family as well as our grandad.
“I honestly didn’t know what the hospice did until we needed their services and we’ll always be thankful for their help. We’ve never taken part in the Midnight Walk before but I’m told it’s a great occasion in aid of such a great cause.”
Albert, a keen dog lover, achieved his wish of opening up a pet shop after he retired from his job as a drayman. Donna is a social worker near her home in Walkden.
More than 2,000 people are expected to take part in the Midnight Walk, the flagship fundraising event for St Ann’s Hospice, on Friday, June 20. The 10k walk starts at midnight from Manchester Central which opens at 9 pm for entertainment.
Registration costs £18, with an early bird fee of £15 before Friday, April 4. The rate is £15 for past walkers and a fee of £10 for walkers aged 11 to 17. To register go to www.mmwalk.org.uk or call the St Ann’s fundraising team on 0161 498 3631.
