Around 20 licenced premises in the Hazel Grove Pub Watch are joining the Safer Stockport Partnership’s ‘Designated Driver Scheme’.
The scheme promotes responsible drinking over Christmas and New Year. It will take place on Friday 21st December, the last Friday before Christmas when there may be a rise in incidents of crime, anti-social behaviour and accidents locally and nationally, caused by excessive drinking.
On the night, anyone drinking in the participating pubs in Hazel Grove will receive their first soft drink ‘on the house’ in exchange for wearing a luminous wristband with the words ‘Designated Driver’ on. This shows their friends and pub goers that he/she has chosen not to drink alcohol and is able to legally drive a motor vehicle.

Councillor Mark Weldon, Executive Member Supporting Communities, said: “The scheme emphasises that a night out can be fun with or without alcohol, and that alcohol should not be consumed by the designated drivers. Stockport residents are always encouraged to drink responsibly and to consume alcohol for enjoyment and in moderation while maintaining a balanced and healthy lifestyle.”
The Designated Driver Scheme is part of Stockport’s Christmas Safety Initiative which aims to inform Stockport residents of ways they can protect themselves and their property over the Christmas season.
Other key messages for the initiative include ’12 Top Tips on how to have a Safe Winter’, crime reduction information which will help to protect residents from vehicle crime and burglary and warnings about the risks of drinking alcohol before cooking or driving.
The messages will be communicated to members of the public in shopping centres, car parks and colleges throughout December. Information will also be available via Facebook, Twitter and on the internet. For more information visit www.saferstockport.org.uk or phone 0161 474 3143.
