From the end of January 2015, work will start on the installation of outdoor gym equipment at Romiley Park, followed shortly afterwards with new outdoor gym equipment at Tangshutts Playing Fields.
The Friends of Romiley Park and the Friends of Tangshutts have joined forces to submit a joint bid to secure funding to install new outdoor gym equipment alongside the Safer Route to School.
Funding has come from The Veolia Environmental Trust, who awarded a grant of £19,273 through the Landfill Communities Fund. The two Friends groups raised the additional money to enable the schemes to proceed.
Tracey Adams, Chair of the Friends of Romiley Park, said:
“The two parks have been dramatically improved over the last ten years and are now visited and enjoyed by many local residents.
“The grant from The Veolia Environmental Trust will make a substantial contribution to installation of the gym equipment. I would also thank the Greenspace Team at Stockport Council, which has been very supportive throughout the submission and development of the schemes.”
Chantal Johnson, from the Friends of Tangshutts, said:
“The Friends of Tangshutt are very happy their vision to help people get fit for free in their green space has been fruitful. The funding from The Veolia Environmental Trust along with a £2,000 donation from Stockport Homes is the icing on the cake. Part of the grant from Stockport Homes will be used to provide free fitness sessions so people can learn how to get the most out of the new equipment. These will be led by qualified, experienced local fitness trainer James Heath.”
Paul Taylor, The Veolia Environmental Trust’s Executive Director, added:
“We work to support community and environmental projects across the UK and since 2001 we have awarded of £1.1m to ones in Cheshire. It is great to hear that these projects are starting. I look forward to seeing the equipment being used and enjoyed, and I congratulate the two groups on all their hard work so far.”
Councillor Martin Candler, Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Communities, said:
“We want to encourage the community to enjoy and use our local greenspaces as well as improve their health and fitness. This new outdoor gym equipment encourages both and is another great boost for residents to go to Romiley Park and Tangshutts Playing Fields.”
