Road works will close A555 for 17 weeks

Congestion around Stanley Green and the A34 looks set to get worse as essential road works drainage repair works on the A555 at its junction with the A34 and Wilmslow Road has forced the closure of the westbound carriageway for up to 17 weeks.

Engineers from the A6 to Manchester Airport Relief Road project are to undertake urgent and essential repairs to the A555 to ensure the road’s safety between the A34 and Wilmslow Road.

From Monday 12th February 2018, this section of road will be closed westbound for up to 17 weeks – see map below – so that significant repair works can be done to the highway drainage. The works are urgent and essential and if left un-repaired could lead to the collapse of the carriageway.

Stockport Council have stated that close monitoring of the road has highlighted that the repairs need to be undertaken immediately in order to ensure the safety of motorists and residents. A press statement said “these works are urgent and essential and we are doing all we can to keep disruption to a minimum, however, the scale of works makes it necessary to close the road westbound.”

To repair the problem the contractors will have to excavate the area to 5 metres below the road level installing steel piles to support the area before replacing the damaged drainage, filling the excavation and then resurfacing the road. Whilst this is taking place, work on the relief road project will continue as planned.

A signed diversion route will be available for motorists travelling along this route along the A34, B5094 Stanley Road and Wilmslow Road. Please be aware the road between Bramhall and Handforth Dean will remain open during the works.

Motorists are also advised to leave extra time for their journeys and to use online tools to help plan your route.

Councillor Kate Butler, Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration at Stockport Council said:

“None of the partners involved in the decision to shut the A555 has taken this decision lightly, however public safety is our upmost priority and we will always do anything necessary to ensure this. Without these urgent and essential repairs we are faced with the potential collapse of this major route.

“We will be working closely with the contractors to do all we can to open up sections of the road as soon as it is safe to do so. We’ll keep everyone up to date with regular updates during the work.”
