Road Works continue as Town Centre Access Plan takes shape

Road Works are a necessary consequence of Stockport Council’s plan to improve traffic flow as part of its £73m Town Centre Access Plan. 

However, creating the improvements as part of the Town Centre Access Plan (TCAP) unfortunately brings with it roadworks and the need for drivers and riders to plan their journey more carefully over the coming months.

By widening roads, improving junctions, creating new cycle lanes and bringing new public squares to Stockport, the Town Centre Access Plan (TCAP) is designed to cut journey times, reduce congestion and make it easier for everyone to travel in and around Stockport.

Works taking place in the town centre over coming weeks will include:

Widening of St Mary’s Way – this is one of our most significant projects and will mean more traffic can use this key route when work is finished this spring. Work is now in its final stages, with the focus of activity being at the junction of St Mary’s Way and Hall Street. To complete this work as quickly and safely as possible the left hand turn into Hall Street is currently temporarily closed southbound for up to seven weeks (uphill from the Portwood roundabout) and a signed diversion route is in place for motorists via Hempshaw Lane.

Widening the approach to M60, Junction 1 (Hollywood Way) – to help ease congestion on the approach to this busy motorway junction we will be creating a new lane on the Hollywood Way approach to the roundabout, as well as making improvements to the roundabout and Brinksway junction. From Sunday 4th February 2018, lane one on the northbound approach to Junction 1 from Hollywood Way will be closed between the Yew Street traffic lights and the motorway slip road for four weeks. This is to allow the construction of a new retaining wall, creating the additional space in which the lane will be introduced. The lane closure has been planned to coincide with the half term holiday to try and keep disruption to a minimum.

Councillor Kate Butler, Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration at Stockport Council said

“Our vision for the future of travel in Stockport town centre is ambitious and will change how people get into and around Stockport for the better. Work on projects improving our town centre transport links is already well underway, each of which will ultimately bring significant benefits for residents and visitors.

“In order to make sure the investment brings the maximum benefit to Stockport we need to carry on with our highway improvements. Over the coming months there will be some changes on roads in the town centre and I would encourage everyone to regularly use our online information to plan their routes in and around the town centre.

“We apologise in advance for delays to journeys during the works.”

Recent projects completed include: 

• Developing public squares and the installation of paving along Prince’s Street, Bridgefield Street and Redrock 
• A new right turn off the A6 into Redrock opened, giving motorists direct access into the town’s newest car park as well as Merseyway
• The opening of the Booth Street link road giving traffic another route around the Greek Street roundabout

Funded by the Local Growth Deal, the £73m TCAP programme is one of the largest scheme of its kind being undertaken in Greater Manchester at present and will play a key role in supporting the growth of Stockport town centre.
