As recently reported (Daily Mail – March 2013), the cost of printing on a standard desktop ink printer is more expensive than purchasing fine champagne, vintage port or Chanel No 5 on a drop per drop basis.
Daily Mail – March 5th 2013
Over the past decade manufacturers of printer ink cartridges have actually reduced the amount of ink in them, this despite them being similar in physical size.
In 2004, a typical HP cartridge had 42ml of ink and cost £20 and print 930 pages. Today, a similar best selling cartridge has just 5ml of ink, costs around £13 and manages only around 200 pages!
It appears that the business model is to sell the actual printer cheap then exploit the consumer by selling the replacement cartridges at extortionate rates.
Last week a well know supermarket was advertising a desktop printer/scanner for £30.00. Excellent bargain! However, the true cost comes to light when the user has to purchase two replacement cartridges at a cost of at least £20.00 each. A typical cartridge containing 4ml of ink can cost approximately £13.00. This equates to more than £3,000.00 per litre – a litre of Don Perignon champagne is just £150.00!!
Stockport based Leemic can provide a fully inclusive supported service, including cartridge replacement, that can prove more financially viable (fixed cost per print) and a ‘greener’ option.
