Discount supermarket chain, Lidl, has submitted a formal planning application to build a new store on the former Stockport Works site in Cheadle Heath.
The planning application follows a public consultation on the German supermarket’s plans for the store which launched in November 2022, which attracted 47% positive feedback for the plans and a lower-than-average response rate from the local community: just 256 responses were received out of over 8,000 leaflets issued.
The new store will repurpose the Cheadle Heath Works site which had previously been occupied by long-term tenants, Deanprint, who had been at the site for over 100 years before announcing a move last autumn to new premises at nearby Lawnhurst Trading Estate.
The new supermarket comprises a nearly 2,000 sq metre building (of which 1,251 sq metres will be for customers) along with 100 car parking spaces, including four dedicated Electric Vehicle spaces. The new store is also expected to create around 40 employment opportunities for local residents.
Lidl has ambitions to expand to 1,100 UK stores by 2025, with Stockport among the locations in the North-west it was targeting to broaden its reach, offering finders’ fees to members of the public who help connect the retailer with locations for new stores. Alongside the Cheadle Heath location, Lidl has also moved forward with plans for two other new stores in South Manchester in Chorlton and Wythenshawe.
