Developer, Story Homes, and Stockport Grammar School has submitted plans to Stockport Council for 112 new homes on playing fields formerly used by the independent school.
The planning application follows a public consultation in early 2024 ahead of the submission, and the exchanging of contracts on the fields at the beginning of March 2025. The scheme proposes the delivery of a mix of 1-5 bedroom homes on the approximately 9.4 acre site and will including 50% affordable housing provision.
Homes will also include electric car charging provision, while the wider development will also incorporate a wildlife corridor and landscaping to support biodiversity, as well as species enhancements on-site, such as bat and bird boxes.
The playing fields site, accessed from Dialstone Lane, are discontinuous with the rest of Stockport Grammar School’s campus, and have gone unused for over seven years owing to safeguarding challenges for the school in using them. The site also includes a single property on Dialstone Lane which is also owned by Stockport Grammar School for use as a caretaker’s residence, and will be demolished as part of the scheme.
Funds raised by the school from the development of housing on the site will support Stockport Grammar School’s Bursary programme, supporting children from disadvantaged backgrounds to attend the independent school. The school intends to expand its bursary programme to 550 students by 2037, when the school marks its 550th anniversary.
Story Homes hope to commence work on the Stockport Grammar site in late 2025, subject to approval of the planning application.
