Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation’s (MDC) plans to redevelop the former site of St Thomas’s hospital have taken a step further following the Council’s Communities & Housing Scrutiny Committee meeting on 13th July.
Situated within the Royal George Quarter of Town Centre West, the scheme will be led by the MDC and delivered through Viaduct Housing. The ambition is to deliver the vision and values of the MDC and, in partnership with Homes England, will bring forward 67 new affordable homes at Shaw Heath alongside a new 70-bed Intermediate Care facility.
The 67 affordable homes are made up of a tenure mix 80% shared ownership and 20% social rent in 54 apartments housed within existing buildings alongside 13 new-build townhouses.
The site falls within the MDC’s masterplan for Stockport Town Centre West and adjoins Stockport College to the North East and the Flint Street housing development to the North West that was completed by Stockport Homes and Seddons in early 2019. St Thomas’s will be one of the flagship schemes for both the Council and the MDC to create an exemplar scheme that sets the bar for future Town Centre West developments and a new model of care provision.
Alongside the momentum that is being gathered in Town Centre West, the Council has published its prospectus for All Age Living which sets out the ambition to deliver happy, healthy homes to age well in, in Stockport. Part of this ambition will involve the development of accessible and adaptable lifetime homes where people can live well at home for longer. The redevelopment of St Thomas’s is an ideal opportunity to embrace these principles, while boosting housing supply and social care capacity.
