Ahead of a busy weekend of events, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is encouraging the city-region’s residents to plan their journeys, particularly as Manchester Piccadilly train station is closed.
Network Rail is currently undertaking major track and signalling upgrades, with very few train services only running to/from platforms 13 and 14 until Sunday 22 February while the £7.9 million works are completed, with many trains terminating at Stockport and passengers completing their journeys via Bee Network or rail replacement bus services.
The closure coincides with a packed programme of events at Manchester’s Etihad Campus on Saturday, 21 February. This includes Manchester City taking on Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium (8pm kick-off), James Arthur performing at neighbouring Co-op Live (doors open 6.30pm) and the British National Track Championships taking place at the National Cycling Centre (with sessions at 10am and 5pm).
TfGM has also prepared a dedicated website to help passengers reach the Etihad Campus during the works, available here.
Steve Gilholme, Head of Events at Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) said:
“Saturday is shaping up to be an exceptionally busy day across the Etihad Campus, and with the temporary closure of Manchester Piccadilly affecting many regular rail journeys, it’s really important that people plan ahead.
“We’re working closely with our partners to make sure everyone can get to and from their event reliably, whether that’s by using rail replacement services, Bee Network buses, Metrolink or walking and cycling routes from the city centre.
“The dedicated travel information on the Bee Network website is the best place to check your options before setting off, so your journey is as smooth as possible.”
The work at Manchester Piccadilly is being carried out during the half-term break for most schools in England.
Further information around train journeys into Greater Manchester during this closure can be found on the Network Rail website.
