HMRC are introducing penalties for late real-time PAYE returns, reported by Booth Ainnsworth this week. These changes are being rolled out in stages which will be:
- 6 October 2014 for schemes with 50 or more employees
- 6 March 2015 for all other schemes
Small businesses have had the most difficulty in adjusting to real-time reporting so staging will mean that they have more time to comply with the new arrangements before facing penalty.
Employers who believe they have a reasonable excuse for filing late can speak using the new online appeals system once they have received a penalty notice, which should speed up the appeal process for businesses and HMRC.
