All four political parties that make up Stockport Council have pledged their support to oppose discrimination in all its forms.
The Pledge to Oppose Discrimination was signed by all four group leaders on Tuesday 8th April in the run up to the Local and European Elections on Thursday 22nd May.
Councillor Sue Derbyshire, Liberal Democrat Leader of Stockport Council, Councillor Andrew Verdeille, Leader of the Labour Group, Councillor Syd Lloyd, Leader of the Conservative Group and Councillor Peter Burns, Leader of the Independent Ratepayers Group, jointly said:
“Since the Council was established in 1974 it has been a beacon for democracy and freedom of political expression. Debate has always been robust and uninhibited about local issues which are important to all borough residents.
“By signing this pledge we are all showing that there can be no place in our democratic process in Stockport for those who seek to incite or encourage, blatantly or covertly, racial hatred, prejudice and discrimination between others.”
