Businesses in England to receive £2.2 billion to see them through national restrictions
Significant grant funding for businesses to be delivered via local authorities across England. Small businesses in England will receive a significant £2.2 billion from the government to help them through the current period of national restrictions.
Businesses will benefit from 2 grant schemes: one for businesses that have had to close, and another scheme for further business support as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, helping support people’s jobs and livelihoods and protect communities. GMCA launches its own £10m Bounce Back Fund in second lockdown response
Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) has today launched £10million of emergency funding to support businesses in the city-region ineligible for the national Bounce Back Loan Scheme (BBLS). GMCA has partnered with GC Business Finance to deliver the funding that aims to cover gaps in BBLS availability to some SMEs in Greater Manchester. This is the first time a UK Combined Authority has directly offered funding for this purpose.
GC Business Finance will be looking to support those business not already banking with existing Bounce Back Loan providers, and applications from Greater Manchester businesses are welcomed from Monday 16th November through an online application. Applications will close once the fund is fully committed.
Greater Manchester infection rates and cases continue to fall
Week on week figures show that while some areas in Greater Manchester are still recording high rates of infection, cases are dropping across all 10 boroughs. With a drop of 17%, Stockport has the lowest infection rate across Greater Manchester at 337.4 published yesterday for week ending 11th November, according to Public Health England. Oldham has the region’s highest rate of 627.1 per 100,000. The overall national rate is 270.5, an increase of 10% on the previous week.

Statement from the Director of Public Health in Stockport:
It is now over a week since Stockport was placed under national restrictions as the government tries to stem the spread of of Covid-19 cases. Although we have heard good news this week that a vaccine may soon be available, the virus is still very much circulating in Stockport and this situation is far from over. The case rates are 373 per 100,000 and cases are occurring in all 21 wards across Stockport. We are seeing around 150 new cases in the borough each day. Of particular concern is a rise in the number of cases in those over 60 because this has led to a rise in hospital admissions, which are now higher than at the peak of the first wave of infection in the spring. There are early signs of slowly decreasing rates across our population, but we must monitor the situation closely to see if this trend continues. The latest published data can be found here.
This situation is serious and requires all of us to work together to limit the detrimental impact of the virus on our community so this means you must stay at home, including for work if possible, especially if you are classed as clinically extremely vulnerable to coronavirus. There are a number of business grant schemes available that cover different periods of time and different situations, such as being under national lockdown.

The Council currently has two live business grant schemes – both for businesses that have a business rates liability, and they are for the following circumstances:

Business secretary Alok Sharma has paid tribute to the construction industry for playing its part in keeping the economy ticking through the pandemic.
In an open letter addressed to all in construction, Sharma praises the industry for rapidly delivering emergency hospital capacity, keeping vital public services going and speeding up the delivery of infrastructure schemes.

Insider: Greggs confirm 820 redundancies
Greggs is set to cut more than 800 jobs in the wake of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. A statement from chief executive Roger Whiteside on an employee information site said “recent weeks have been particularly difficult” across the Greggs business. The company has confirmed 820 redundancies following a consultation but said “several counter proposals” had been accepted which “have helped save jobs”. Whiteside’s statement added: “Covid trading conditions have forced this action onto our business and we are all very saddened by the need to part company with around 820 friends and colleagues, many of whom have worked with us for many years. Whilst we are sad to see this number of people leave us, we are grateful to our colleagues in our shops who have been prepared to accept a reduction in their contract hours to minimise the need for further redundancies.”
