Rail operator, Northern, has announced the completion of work at 77 of its stations across the North of England to improve customer information on platforms.
More than 100 new display screens have been installed, including at Bramhall and Handforth stations in Stockport, with work now complete at 167 of the 387 stations managed by the rail operating company. Other Northern stations near Stockport to have benefited from the upgrade to customer information screens include at Mauldeth Road in South Manchester, and Adlington in Cheshire.
The new screens feature white LEDs which can be seen from a further distance and the higher colour contrast also makes them more accessible for passengers with some visual impairments. Train information is now displayed in a clear, easy to read format and is more informative about when trains are delayed. Safety messages will also be shown, such as ‘short platform’ guidance.
Mark Powles, commercial and customer director at Northern, said:
“We are investing £14 million over the next five years to bring better and clearer information to passengers.
“Our new screens are more accessible and will make journeys easier for everyone.”
Northern operates local rail stations and services across Stockport, and is the second largest train operator in the UK, with nearly 2,500 services a day to more than 500 stations across the North of England.
