The latest step in delivering a new transport interchange in Stockport town centre is to take place this week when a walking and cycling bridge that will connect the train station and new bus interchange is installed.
The linking bridge will provide a direct route from outside the main entrance of Stockport Railway Station to a new rooftop park being built on top of Stockport Interchange, the town centre’s new 21st century bus station that is due to complete in 2024. The link will help make it easier to travel in and out of Stockport using a range of modes of transport, integrating train connections with local bus services and cycle routes, and possible future extensions of the Metrolink tram network into Stockport town centre.
Delivery and erection of the bridge will take place overnight from 9pm Wednesday 1st February to 6am Friday 3rd February, according to a tweet from Stockport Council announcing the road closures needed to facilitate the works. With road closures expected on Exchange Street and Daw Bank, diversions will be in place for traffic moving between the A6 and King Street West overnight on 1st and 2nd February.
The construction of Stockport Interchange on the site of the former bus station began in March 2022 by contractors, Wilmott Dixon. Demolition of the bus station began in September 2021, with buses moved to a temporary site at Heaton Lane car park while work is carried out.
The multi-million pound project is part of Stockport’s wider £1 billion investment in its town centre and is being delivered by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), Stockport Council, and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA). Developers CityRise are also delivering a 196-apartment build-to-rent scheme on the site. The project will also see a rooftop park built on top of the bus stands to bring new green spaces to the town centre, with access from the A6 and the River Mersey.
Stockport Interchange is expected to open to buses in Spring 2024.
