A second phase of works to repair, modernise and improve Stockport town centre’s Merseyway Car Park will begin at the end of April 2024 as part of the town’s £1 billion regeneration.
With contractors having almost finished work on the Orange Zone of the car park, the Yellow and Green zones will close at the end of April to enable works in these areas to go ahead.
The car park has been undergoing a programme of essential structural repairs and waterproofing works to prevent further wear and tear and to ensure the safety of users. The works will continue help to protect this town centre asset and support businesses as well as providing a further boost to the town centre. The nature of the works means they need to be carried out during the drier, summer months.
Stockport Council is co-ordinating the works with other roadworks and events in the town centre.
There will still be more than 1,000 spaces open at all times within Merseyway and Redrock Car Park, with other car parks remaining open across the town centre. Open areas of the car park will be clearly signed, including access to Blue Badge parking. A one-way system will be in operation within the car park but all vehicle entrances and exits will be open and accessible.
Work to the car park’s Orange Zone began last year as part of a £5.5 million programme of repairs and improvements to Merseyway Car Park that were approved by Stockport Council in 2022. Work is expected to complete in 2024 and, in addition to structural repairs, will allow for remarking and improvements to pedestrian access and accessibility for disabled visitors to take place.
