United Utilities (UU) has submitted plans for a £15 million scheme to create a new underground water storage reservoir.
The proposals are aimed at keeping reliable water supplies on tap for the south Stockport and High Peak areas.
The communities that would be served by the new service reservoir include: Disley; New Mills; Mellor; Rowarth; Birch Vale; Whaley Bridge and Furness Vale.
Kevin Davies, UU project manager, said: “This will be a major investment for the High Peak area and it’s vital to help safeguard water supplies for around 40,000 people.”
The proposed new structure, at Jackson’s Edge Road, Disley, would store up to 18 million litres of treated water – enough to fill more than eight Olympic-sized swimming pools or 200,000 baths.
