A planning application has been submitted to Stockport Council to demolish the Tesla dealership on Wellington Road in Heaton Chapel, and build 38 new homes on the site.
Plans are being brought forward by the landowner that will see the existing dealership demolished and a small housing development built on the approximately one acre site off the A6 Wellington Road and Howard Avenue.
The proposed scheme will comprise 10 four-bedroom townhouses fronting onto Howard Avenue and at the rear of the site, and 28 one- and two-bedroom apartments in a single block overlooking the A6 . The development will also include off-road parking for residents, accessed from Wellington Road, as well as new tree planting and landscaping to enhance the biodiversity of the site.
The scheme is also targeting 30% affordable housing provision, in line with planning guidelines for The Heatons, although the final contribution will be set out subject to a Financial Viability Statement. CODA Architects have designed the scheme, with the planning submission prepared by Enabl.
A public consultation event was held in May 2025 ahead of the planning submission and attracted some concern about the proposed density of the scheme, and the possibility that the new homes would overlook existing properties. Designs were subsequently amended to lessen the massing of the apartment building, and include more opaque glass on the townhouses on Howard Avenue.
The demolition of the Stockport Tesla dealership follows being the target of small protests during 2025 in light of the role its founder, Elon Musk, has played in US President Donald Trump’s administration. New entrants to the EV market from Chinese brands, as well as a nationwide campaign to boycott Musk’s businesses, which also include the X social media platform, SpaceX rocket manufacturer, and Starlink satellite internet provider, has also seen the car marque’s UK sales decline nearly 10% in 2025 compared to the previous year. Musk has since announced an end to production of Tesla’s most popular Model S and Model X cars to pivot the business’ manufacturing capacity towards robotics and AI projects.
