The new chair of the Stockport Economic Alliance says the skills gap epidemic sweeping the nation is a concern for government and Councils but more importantly young people and their parents.
Corporate/Commercial partner at Gorvins, Christian Mancier, is calling for employers to plug this gap and ensure we get the stars of the future into work by giving them the skills and life experience needed to succeed.
Christian explains: “I am passionate about ensuring that young people in Stockport leave education with the right skills and experience needed to succeed in the future. Stockport’s new Gander programme is one way of ensuring this happens.
“Bringing business and education together, the Gander programme gives students the opportunity to draw on the experience and expertise of local companies by providing practical help and support to sixth form students helping them make informed careers choices based on real life experiences.”
While Gander is designed to help inspire the next generation of employees, business leaders and entrepreneurs, companies can benefit too. Giving staff the chance to volunteer helps them develop their own skills, learn new ones and bring these and new insights back into the business, perhaps even unveiling the managing directors of the future.
Christian adds: “In the past few weeks, a group of Performing Arts students took part in mock interviews. Everyone that took part agreed the interviews were helpful and interesting and the feedback from everyone involved has been superb.
“Through Gander, Gorvins Solicitors will be providing work experience for law students giving the opportunity to get hands on experience and an insight into the world of work.
“Supported by the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce in Stockport, together with Stockport Council and the Stockport Economic Alliance, I would encourage any Stockport company or individual in business, from any sector, to do what they can, even if it is as little as an hour here and there, to support the work force of the future.”
