Mulbury and Stockport-based housing provider Equity Housing Group have officially broken ground on a new housing development in Reddish, Stockport.
The development will contain 14 red brick townhouses adjacent to the local 19th century Victoria and Elisabeth Mills in the Houldsworth Conservation Area.
Comprising nine 3-bed and five 4-bed houses, each with two car parking spaces, the properties will be available via shared ownership once completed in November 2019.
Once a textile dying works which has been vacant since 1976, the development will provide much-needed affordable housing in the area.
In the past year house prices in Reddish were 7% up from 2017and up 19% from 2016, potentially pricing out young people and locals wishing to remain in the area. The new properties have been built to complement the nearby mills and original terraced housing in the area.
Andy Oldale, deputy chief executive at Equity Housing Group, said:
“Over 2018 we gave keys to a number of families to start lives in their new homes and it’s encouraging to see that 2019 is looking to be just as positive with the breaking of ground at the Harrogate Road site.
“It is important to us that any developments we work on integrate seamlessly into the wider community and Harrogate Road does just that. Built using red brick, to complement the surrounding buildings, the development is an extension of the heritage in Reddish and we cannot wait to see the build as it progresses.”
David Wroe, operations director at Mulbury, said:
“We’re proud to be working with Equity Housing Group on this shared ownership scheme which will allow people to get a foothold on the housing ladder in a more affordable way. These will be high-quality sustainable homes that will have a positive impact on the surrounding area.”
The scheme was approved by Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council’s planning committee in September 2018. It has been designed by Gallagher Technical & Design Limited with planning advice provided by Ludlam Associates.
The homes are being built by Mulbury’s affordable housing division Mulbury Homes. Building work on the development is expected to take around 12-months.
