Andrew Stunell is urging waste companies to treat the problem of the apparent foul odour eminating around Bredbury to be a priority for action.
A meeting of waste companies, the Environment Agency and the GM Waste Authority held last month has been told by the MP for Hazel Grove that fixing the ‘Bredbury Stink’ should be their top priority for action.
Commenting later, Andrew said –
“There is a long-standing smell problem for residents, and tracking it down and curing it is taking far too long. I’ve been pushing very strongly for action from the management of the companies concerned, and from the Environment Agency.
“The good news is that the level of complaints has fallen in the last two months, and the Agency has increased its monitoring. I am pleased that legal action is now under way with one company, and that procedures and equipment at another are being strengthened. A third company’s plant has still to be commissioned, and has been stopped from running until it is properly tested.
“The bad news is that residents have had to put up with the Stink for two years so far, and until the Agency gets to the bottom of the problems there can be no guarantee that we’re at the end of them.”
Virador say they will be circulating a newsletter update to residents later this month, and holding their next consultative session in September, and Andrew is urging Bredbury residents who may be still faced by objectionable wind-borne smells to make sure they let the company know of their concerns.
Bredbury resident, Nicola Smith of The Drive, said –
“I came home one day early in the year when it was still cold & wondered what on earth I’d left in my wheelie bin for such a stink. I then realised the bin was empty! All I could think was if it’s like this in winter, what will it be like in the summer? I don’t want to sit in my garden with it, a BBQ doesn’t mask the smell & even the kids don’t want to play out in it.”
The Environment Agency has taken formal action against Junction 25 for not complying with regulations, following numerous warnings that have been issued. Viridor is currently in close communication with the Environment Agency and currently following the rules.
However, if you smell a foul odour in the Bredbury area the Environment Agency want to know about it, make sure you report it via the 24-hour hotline – 0800 80 70 60.
