Stockport based Millie’s Trust is offering local businesses first aid courses in mental health, a topic that should be at the forefront of our minds when we have a working team around us on a daily basis.
Being able to spot the signs that someone is struggling before they hit rock bottom is a skill that is achievable by anyone and one that we should all be aware of in a workplace.
Millie’s Trust run licensed Adult Mental Health England First Aid courses that are accredited by the Royal Society for Public Health and recognised internationally.
Mental ill health costs UK employers £34.9 billion each year, the equivalent of £1,300 for each employee in the UK Workforce (centre for Mental Health, 2017) and at any one time one worker in six will be experiencing depression, anxiety or issues relating to stress (Centre for Mental Health, 2010) with stress, anxiety and depression being the biggest cause of sickness absence in out society. Work related stress alone accounted for 45% of all working days lost to ill health in 2015/2016. (Health and Safety Executive, 2017).
What is mental health first aid?
Mental Health first aid won’t teach you to be a therapist but it will teach you how to listen, reassure and response even in a crisis – just like physical first aid.
Adult MHFA courses are for everyone aged 16 upwards and your course will be delivered by a quality assured instructor who has attended training accredited by the Royal Society for Public Health and they are trained to keep people safe and supported whilst they learn.
What will you learn?
Through a mixture of group activities, presentations and discussions, on this course you will learn;
- A deeper understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect people’s wellbeing – including your own.
- Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues.
- Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress.
- Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgmental listening
- Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guising them to appropriate support.
Attending this course will also raise awareness and mental health literacy, reduce stigma, boost knowledge and confidence in dealing with mental health issues and promote early intervention which enable recovery.
